Feels like a thousand years away as we feel our way gingerly through frozen January 2026…
But you can bet that very bottom dollar (or bitcoin or five pound note or poker chip) that it will rage around before you can say “sesquicentennial….”
Sesquicentennial – a word that I have never used or heard before. And there it is, twice in two paragraphs…
Meaning 250th Anniversary – apparently. And I’m not in a position to argue that one…
2029 will see the Sesquicentennial (three times in four paragraphs…??!!) celebration of the Epsom Derby. What a fabulous opportunity to celebrate the great race, and to engage Epsom and the wider community in one very big hillside party. London’s race. Capital City landmarks clearly visible from the Grandstand. Get Greater London up that hill to party….
100,000 over the two day Derby meeting is the stated aim. From those charged with dragging this iconic event out of the deep mire of recent times. An energetic and energised team in place. Thankfully, because there was no further downhill or off the radar for the meeting to fall…
Maybe we will have a runner. Probably not – but you can’t blame a man for dreaming…
Racehorse Trainers are, in large part, peddlers of dreams. Meaning that we need to dream big ourselves. I have many wild dreams and aspirations. Some of them will need a little work and fine tuning before they become gilded reality. But I will most certainly not die wondering….
Ed Chamberlin hands over to Simon Holt as the runners head behind the stalls for the 2029 Derby….
“Thanks Ed. And they are beginning to load. And there’s the favourite, calm and relaxed, trained less than a furlong away from the start by George Baker and his team at Downs House….”
Without dreams, we sometimes don’t have much to hold onto. Without dreams, it would all be rather dull. And ‘dull’ is most certainly not for me….
