Holiday…

Indian Summer heat. Not a cloud in the sky. Down the road…

So off I headed to Fontwell Park for an afternoon in the sunshine watching some grass roots National Hunt action. Parked up in the middle of the course. Foolishly, no picnic or bottles of wine in the car boot – schoolboy error. What was I thinking…??

Racing that will have had nil impact on ante post markets or have registered more than a flicker on Racing Post headlines. But winners are winners. And there were six of them including our old friend Mottazen. Dude of a horse, and becoming a Fontwell “legend” – winning his 5th at the track for Hen Knight. The old boy was tough and game and looked magnificent…

Small crowd. Diehard. I was hungry for some lunch – but luckily not very hungry as options were shy of limited. I saw a bowl of “roast” potatoes but not much else, although there was something strange being handed out in red and white cardboard boxes. I wonder if people actually paid for the “strange”….

A week ago, Compiegne and its culinary brilliance. Chalk and fromage…

But I was not there for lunch, and the afternoon was gentle and balmy and full of good sport. And the view as the horses fly over the downhill fence will never fail to stir the heart and strengthen the admiration for the brave horses and men and women taking flight…

Five miles apart. But poles apart…

Fontwell yesterday. Goodwood today. Which is Glorious…

Great friends in a high box and the finest view in Europe. Sorry Snaffles. NESTHORN (Benoit De La Sayette) in a 4 runner Classified contest. The two 3-yr-olds are getting weight and possibly the advantage. But £25,000 races and four runners does not bounce around that often. Love our horse. Young horse. Days to be had – whether that is today or not…

Kempton in the evening. CASHINOROYALE (Pat C) and THINTHREAD (Jack Mitchell) on the sand…

Sad to hear that jockey John Lowe has died. He was good…

As was Hurricane Fly who has also headed to the celestial racecourses. Superstar…

Made it to Fontwell. Farnham Town, a bridge too far….

They lost to Cirencester, so that was a good swerve…
